Volunteering opportunities at the 1620s House and Garden

Would you like to spend one day a week or one day a fortnight engaging with visitors in the lovely setting of our furnished rooms? Or perhaps you would rather be working in the garden?

If so, we are currently recruiting both Volunteer House Interpreters and Volunteer Garden Team members.

What do the roles entail?

The Volunteer House Interpreter Team

(Working on a rota from Thursdays to Sundays from April to the end of September.)

  • Engage with the visitors, helping them to understand the history of the house and the historical use of the rooms
  • Collect feedback from visitors
  • To encourage them to (respectfully) explore, touch and feel the furniture and fittings
  • Give the visitors a quality experience, encouraging them to come back with family and friends
  • Perhaps undertake crafts, such as calligraphy in the study, butter making in the dairy, or spinning or embroidery in the Great Chamber
  • Helping out at special events throughout the year
  • Support the Customer Liaison Assistants and Catering Officer if necessary
  • Read and digest the provided information on the house and perhaps read around the subject for a fuller understanding of the period
  • Take the opportunity of organised visits to other sites to pick up skills and interpretation ideas
  • Perhaps undertake short (15 minute) presentations on the history of the house to a timed schedule
  • Support other team members in delivering guided tours of the house to visiting groups
